Carbondale, SIU to honor veterans during Nov. 11 ceremony

CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — The City of Carbondale and Southern Illinois University Carbondale will hold a Veterans Day ceremony on Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. to honor SIU and Southern Illinois veterans who served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

The ceremony will take place at the flagpole at South Normal Avenue and West Grand Avenue on the SIU campus.

The program will include a proclamation from Carbondale Mayor Carolin Harvey, remarks by Tom Harness, a veteran and SIU alumnus, and a wreath-laying ceremony accompanied by the playing of taps by members of the SIU Trumpet Studio, directed by Ricky Spears, assistant professor of practice in the School of Music.

If the federal government is fully open on Veterans Day, SIU Air Force and Army ROTC cadets will conduct a vigil at the flagpole from 6 a.m. to noon, with a change of guards every 15 minutes.
