Carbondale to bury 100-year time capsule during America 250 celebration

CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — The City of Carbondale is inviting the public to a ceremony celebrating the burial of a 100-year time capsule as part of the community’s America 250 festivities.

The event is scheduled for noon on Thursday, July 2, near the flagpole at the Southern Illinois Multimodal Station (SIMMS).

The time capsule will contain items contributed by city staff, community organizations, local businesses, public schools and Southern Illinois University that reflect life in Carbondale in 2026.

The ceremony will include remarks from representatives of the City of Carbondale, SIU and local schools before the capsule is lowered into the ground. The capsule is scheduled to remain sealed until July 2, 2126.

The event coincides with the completion of the Southern Illinois Multimodal Station and regional celebrations marking America’s 250th anniversary.
