CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — The City of Carbondale will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony June 18 to celebrate the completion of approximately $1 million in improvements at the Superblock Recreational Complex.

The ceremony is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at the Superblock, a 69-acre sports and recreation facility that features baseball and softball diamonds, soccer fields, running tracks, playgrounds, outdoor fitness equipment and a walking trail.

The project was funded through a partnership between the city and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. Officials said the city received a $500,000 Tourism Attractions and Festivals Grant from the state and provided matching funds and additional funding to complete the project.

Improvements include a new concession and restroom building with ADA-compliant facilities, upgraded sidewalks and pathways, additional spectator seating and other enhancements designed to improve accessibility and accommodate tournaments, community events and recreational activities.

City officials said the upgrades are part of a long-term effort to strengthen the Superblock’s role as a regional youth sports destination and attract additional sports tourism to the area.

“This represents a major investment in one of Carbondale’s most important recreational assets,” City Manager Stan Reno said in a statement.

Community members, youth sports organizations and local officials are invited to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
