Cardinals fans gather in Cape Girardeau for Opening Day
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – For some, it’s just a casual rooting interest. For others, a passion, and for others still, maybe even a lifestyle. Whatever the case, being a Cardinals fan means that Opening Day is a little extra special.
Cardinals fan John Hendricks said Opening Day brings back fond memories.
“My dad took us to Busch Stadium back in the ‘60s when it first opened,” he said. “It’s also a renewal of family and our history and our traditions.”
Fellow Cardinals fan George Florin recalled his time growing up in St. Louis and going to Cardinals games.
“I grew up working paper routes and mowing lawns to get a quarter to get on the bi-state and go down and get tickets at the bleachers for a buck.”
Florin said it isn’t Opening Day without a certain St. Louis staple.
“It’s the Clydesdales,” he said. “It’s not Opening Day if the Clydesdales aren’t there.”
Hendricks said baseball and Opening Day in particular make up the fabric of so many people’s lives.
“It’s just part of a tradition that goes so far back in history, a hundred years of guys like me watching games,” he said.
Win or lose, Opening Day is the kickoff to the marathon every Cardinals fan is willing to run.
