Career expo held for 8th graders in Paducah

PADUCAH, Ky. (KBSI) – The Paducah Area Chamber of Commerce hosted its fourth career expo for eighth graders called WKY Launch Experience.

More than 80 students in the western Kentucky area were able to attend the expo, to learn about different career opportunities they can take before they enter high school, and to be better able to choose the right path for themselves: whether that is post-secondary education or a competitive trade.

“We have about 40 businesses and organizations that are here talking about the careers they have either at their place or schools that have, that offer those career fields,” said Sandra Wilson, president of The Paducah Area Chamber of Commerce.

As an opportunity to be exposed to a lot of different careers, it’s important for eighth grade students to venture out and see the different career paths they can pursue, to help guide them in choosing their class path in high school and eventually college.

“The eighth-grade year is a great year for them to start thinking about what they’re going to take in high school,” Wilson said. “This is a great time for them to see the career opportunities.”

The schools in attendance included McCracken County, Paducah, St. Mary, and Community Christian Academy School systems.

The hope is that some students will get a taste of a potential career opportunity open to them, inspiring interest in the top local business sectors before entering high school.
