Caruthersville police warn of callers impersonating local banks

CARUTHERSVILLE, Mo., (KBSI) — Caruthersville police are warning residents about a phone scam involving callers who pose as representatives of local banks.

Several residents have reported calls claiming there is suspicious activity on an account, a problem with a debit card or another urgent banking issue.

Police said the callers attempt to obtain account and debit card numbers, PINs, Social Security numbers, online banking credentials or one-time security codes.

Scammers may also use “spoofing” technology to make the call appear to come from a legitimate local number.

Anyone receiving a suspicious call should hang up without providing information and contact the bank directly using the number printed on the back of their debit card or listed on the bank’s official website.

Police also encourage residents to share the warning with older family members and others who may be targeted.
