Caruthersville School District remitted for remaining 2023-2024 season
CARUTHERSVILLE Mo. (KBSI) – On January 24, conference leaders reinstated the Caruthersville School District to be able to participate in The Bootheel Athletic Conference.
The remission is followed by a suspension, for over month long, due to an altercation at a boys’ basketball game.
“We finally came up with an agreement that everyone was able to get on board with over the last week and get final approval on that,” said Superintendent Brad Gerling.
Moving forward, conference leaders agree that safety protocols and plans will be formalized and reinforced for the district’s basketball games to ensure everyone’s safety.
According to Gerling, “specific numbers of supervisors or enforcing separate gates at parking areas.”
He additionally says it is refreshing to have the teams participating in sports again, and believes the community is pleased with the decision as well.
“They need sports, I feel like it’s really good on their mental, and helping with their grades and especially their future,” said Kianza Slaughter, who is a Caruthersville resident.
“We’re actually playing in the semi-finals of the conference tournament boys’ basketball, this evening,” said Gerling.
