Centralia man arrested, charged with murder in deadly shooting

CENTRALIA, Ill. (KBSI) — Illinois State Police have arrested a Centralia man in connection with a shooting that left one person dead and three others injured.

Authorities said the incident occurred April 19 in the 900 block of Kell Street, where four victims were transported to a hospital with gunshot wounds. One victim, 19-year-old Stephen McCary III, later died.

Investigators identified 21-year-old Shavonte D. Samuels as a suspect and took him into custody April 21.

The Marion County State’s Attorney’s Office has charged Samuels with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, aggravated discharge of a firearm and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.

Samuels is being held in the Marion County Jail pending a hearing. Authorities said the investigation is ongoing.

Officials noted that charges are allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
