Child remains in critical condition after tornado hits Ballard County KY

GAGE, Ky. (KBSI) – The Ballard County community is holding onto hope today after a tornado touched down in the area on the evening of Wednesday April 2, 2025 leaving its mark on both buildings and the community.
An 8-year-old remains in critical condition after his family pulled into a church parking lot to seek safety from the storm and were directly impacted.
Emergency Management Director of Ballard County Travis Holder shares details.
“We did have one family that was sheltering at a local church under a car port, they did sustain injuries, three non-life threatening, one we sent out in critical condition, he’s currently at an out of state hospital at this time” says Holder.
According to Holder around 8:45 pm on Wednesday evening an EF-2 tornado touched down in Ballard County near the Gage community and traveled into McCracken County causing structural damage and power outages.
Holder says cleanup efforts are underway.
“We started an initiative that will start Monday at the Ballard County recycle center, we’ll be accepting storm debris. This will be any kind of construction materials and what not. We cannot accept trees, limbs brush or anything else, they’ll be accepting that Monday April 7 through April 30th, that’ll be of no charge to citizens of the Gage community, they will have to show an ID.”
As the community is continuing to clean up damage the storm left behind, they now have to watch for flooding as the county is now under a severe flood watch and several roads have already been blocked off to flooding.
“Were supposed to be getting an additional 5-10 inches of rain over the next 48 hours, that’s going on to an already saturated ground will create a very large risk for our citizens in our community” says Holder.
Holder says they will continue to watch flood warnings to determine next steps for the Ballard County community.
“We don’t see a major need for a sand bagging however if that long term flood does happen then we will start one” says Holder.
