CAPE GIRARDEAU Mo. (KBSI) – Christmas is shining bright today but we are just a week away from the New Year and to show the gratitude over the past year Cape Girardeau citizens have coffee and donuts with local police.

“Thank you for your service y’all do so much and you’re not appreciated like you should be,” said Ashworth.

Sweet donuts and hot coffee on a cold day at Krispy Kreme Donuts as citizens from Cape Girardeau look at all the events that have taken place the past year.

Locals are here to give a handshake and a smile to the local police who were here to help the community all year long.

Alvin Ashworth is from Cape Girardeau and works at Cape Public Schools. He loves to be able to have a conversation with the police and let them know he appreciates all the work they do for their town, and it doesn’t go unnoticed.

“There’s time that they’ve had to come to the school to help us. When people came in and we couldn’t get them to leave, they were there to help us when we needed them,” said Ashworth.

Ashworth says he loves living in Cape Girardeau as he feels safe and notices all the hard work that is put in behind the scenes to keep crime off the streets and overall putting safety first.

“They do so much good. I don’t know anything bad that they have. I mean, they’re just great. Where would we be without them,” said Ashworth.

Public Information Officer for Cape Girardeau Police Department, Bobby Newton loves being able to see the appreciation the citizens show as police have put in hardwork throughout the year.

Newton also loves being able to have this time to let the public issue any concerns or questions they have had.

“We’ve had several services come through, shake our hands, thank us for our service. You know, just, you know, really showed that they appreciate what their officers are doing, and, and that’s great. And we appreciate that as well. But again, you know, this is a great opportunity. If somebody does have questions or concerns about something that they may be experiencing, they can always meet us at these events and ask the questions,” said Newton.

Hosting events like this give the public a minute to express not only their gratitude but make friends with the Cape Girardeau police. This also gives more of a chance to be able to issue any concerns they have had over the past year and going into the new year to come.

This means a lot to Newton especially during the holiday season as he gets to be active with his coworkers and the community in Cape which is one of the main reasons why he loves his job.

“Yeah. You know, we’re very community oriented. We love being out in the community. And so anytime that we get the opportunity to be with the community on a positive level, we try to take advantage of that. So, yeah, it’s great to finish off the year strong. doing events like this,” said Newton.

Cape Girardeau Police Department is hoping to have a good year ahead and other events like this one to stay active within the community.

The Cape Girardeau Police Department is encouraging people to follow them on Facebook and keep up with their social media alerts and events to be aware of what’s going on in your area.
