Christopher PD enforces zero-tolerance for stop-arm violations

CHRISTOPHER, Ill., (KBSI) – The Christopher Police Department is reminding motorists that they are legally required to stop whenever a school bus extends its stop arm and activates flashing red lights — regardless of the type of roadway, including private roads and parking lots.

On two-lane roads, all traffic in both directions must stop, police said.

Failing to stop for a school bus stop arm endangers children and carries significant penalties:

First offense: Minimum $300 fine and a possible three-month driver’s license suspension

Second offense within five years: Minimum $1,000 fine and a possible one-year suspension

The department said it maintains zero tolerance for stop-arm violations, and drivers who commit one will be cited.

Officials also noted that Christopher school buses are equipped with cameras that record each violation. Citations will be issued to the vehicle’s owner even if an officer is not present.

“Please help keep our children safe,” the department said. “Stop for school buses.”
