City of Cape says Cold Weather could spike water main breaks

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) –  Cape Girardeau Water customers should be aware of possible water main breaks.

As temperature drops, the City of Cape says citizens need to be prepared for winter weather.

This year comes with an additional warning for Cape Girardeau water customers should be prepared for additional water main breaks.

“It is not uncommon to see more water main breaks when the ground freezes, hardens, and thaws,” said Assistant Public Works Director Brock Davis. “And unfortunately for our customers, we have seen more water main breaks in general.”

According to Emergency Preparedness Experts they recommend storing at least one gallon of water per person per day for several days, for drinking and sanitation. Water, food, and other supplies are an essential part of a home emergency kit that prepares households for disasters, winter weather, and in this case water main breaks.
