CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — The City of Carbondale is launching a new series of group bicycle rides aimed at celebrating the city’s expanding bike infrastructure and encouraging riders of all experience levels to ride together.
The inaugural Carbondale Bikes! ride, billed as a “Winter Ride,” is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 7, beginning at 10 a.m. Riders will gather in the community room at the Neighborhood Co-Op grocery store in the Murdale Shopping Center, where participants will be asked to sign a waiver.
From there, riders will complete a 10- to 12-mile loop that includes the Saluki Greenway and the Mud Line Bike Path. About one mile of the route will be on an unpaved gravel surface, and organizers recommend a mountain or hybrid bike. Portions of the ride will take place on streets with moving traffic. Riders are strongly encouraged to wear bright clothing and use bike lights. Helmets are required.
The ride will be led by city staff members and experienced cyclists Molly Maxwell and Brice Dion. Maxwell said the event offers an opportunity to showcase Carbondale’s newest bike paths ahead of spring.
“These projects represent Carbondale’s ongoing dedication to providing alternative transportation infrastructure that supports sustainability and enhances quality of life,” Maxwell said. She encouraged riders with questions about the route or cold-weather preparation to contact her at mmaxwell@carbondaleil.gov.
The event is a “no-drop” ride, meaning participants will not be left behind due to pace, mechanical issues or rest breaks.
If inclement weather is forecast, a decision will be announced through city communications by 5 p.m. the day before the event. A rain date is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 21.
