CARBONDALE, Ill. (KBSI) – The City of Carbondale as well as Southern Illinois Moms Demand Action group look to raise support for National Gun Violence Awareness Day.

The groups encourage people to wear orange and attend the wear orange weekend events Friday, May 31 and Saturday, June 1.

The organization Moms Demand Actions fights for public safety measures that protect people from gun violence.

The Wear Orange campaign originated as an opportunity to raise support for both survivors and victims from gun violence after the passing of Hadiya Pendleton in 2013. Every year the first Friday in June is National Gun Violence Awareness Day for the nation and the city of Carbondale to honor and remember those affected by gun violence.

Wear Orange encourages citizens to participate in the outreach by wearing the color orange to honor survivors as they work to end gun violence June 7 through June 9. The organization Wear Orange chooses orange as its symbolize because it is the radiant orange color hunters wear to protect themselves in the woods from other hunters.

Additionally to the Wear Orange movement, Southern Illinois Moms Demand Action will also lead different Wear Orange events and workshops throughout Carbondale.

Starting off on Friday, May 31 at 6 p.m. Mayor Harvey will read a proclamation that recondenses the first Friday in June as National Gun Violence Awareness day in Carbondale at the Civic Center.

After that, the “Loving Yourself through Trauma” workshop takes place on Saturday, June 1 from 10 a.m. to noon at the First Presbyterian Church in Carbondale.

The events conclude that weekend as Wear Orange will host a special event at the Carbondale Town Square Pavilion Saturday, June 1 from 5-8 p.m. Attendees will be able to enjoy special SICCD contra dancing, music and tabling. All events are free and welcome to the public.
