CARBONDALE, Ill. (KBSI) – The City of Carbondale is launching a comprehensive survey of historic and architecturally significant properties in an effort to document and preserve the region’s architectural and cultural heritage.

This landmark initiative is made possible through the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR). It administers the Certified Local Government (CLG) grant program utilizing federal funding it receives from the U.S. Department of Interior, National Park Service (NPS).

The Historic and Architecturally Significant Property Survey aims to identify and document historically significant buildings, structures, and sites within our jurisdiction, spanning a wide range of architectural styles and periods.

Over the next several months, a team of highly trained architectural historians and preservation specialists will meticulously survey buildings within the Northeast Quadrant of Carbondale, according to the city of Carbondale.

The survey will encompass residential, commercial, and public structures.

Cataloging the historic sites will provide invaluable resources for researchers, historians, and architects, fostering a deeper understanding of our community’s past and guiding future preservation efforts.

The inventory will serve as a tool for local governments, planners, and developers to make informed decisions regarding the protection and adaptive reuse of our architectural assets.

Once complete, the inventory will help take a step forward in safeguarding Carbondale’s architectural and cultural heritage.
