City officials warn residents of USPS postmark change affecting mail deadlines

MAYFIELD, Ky., (KBSI) — City of Mayfield officials are alerting residents to an important change in how the U.S. Postal Service processes mail that could affect deadlines for payments and documents.
Mail is no longer postmarked at local post offices. Instead, items are postmarked when they reach a regional processing center, which may occur several days after they are mailed.
Because of the change, residents are advised not to wait until the due date to mail returns or payments. City officials recommend mailing items early or using certified mail to obtain proof of mailing.
USPS has indicated customers may request a local postmark at the time of mailing; however, officials note that honoring such requests is not guaranteed.
The City Clerk’s Office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. A drop box is also available next to the office door for added convenience.
