CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — The Community Counseling Center will offer free training sessions throughout May in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month.
The courses are designed to help participants identify, understand and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges.
Officials said both Adult Mental Health First Aid and Youth Mental Health First Aid courses will be available at multiple locations across southeast Missouri, including Cape Girardeau, Marble Hill, Ste. Genevieve, Fredericktown and Perryville.
The adult-focused course covers topics such as crisis response, trauma and self-care, while the youth course is tailored to helping adolescents ages 12 to 18 and addresses issues including ADHD, eating disorders, bullying and social media.
Training sessions are scheduled on May 4, May 11, May 14, May 26 and May 27, with times varying by date and location.
Organizers said participants will learn the ALGEE action plan, a five-step approach used to assess risk and provide support.
Pre-registration is required, and participants should expect to complete about two hours of coursework before attending a session.
