Community reflects on significance of Flag Day as symbol of unity

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) — June 14, the nation celebrates Flag Day, a commemoration of the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the United States flag.

Amanda Woods, Military and Veterans Services Officer at Southeast Missouri State University, emphasizes that Flag Day represents more than just the adoption of the national flag.

“Flag Day is a great reminder to our entire country and other countries of all the people who have given their lives, their time, and their support for our country,” said Woods. “We have Veterans Day. We have Memorial Day and Patriots Day which are dedicated to specific communities within our country. But today, Flag Day is for everyone, and I think that speaks to the unity of our country.”

Demonstrating this unity, Brent Humphries, assistant canteen manager at VFW Post 3838 in Cape Girardeau, has displayed all the military flags at the post.

Humphries emphasizes that one does not need to be in the military to understand the importance of displaying a flag.

“Everyone has some type of tie to a flag,” said Humphries. “A flag means something to each of us, whether it’s your national flag, a club sports team, or just another reason to celebrate and fly Old Glory.”

VFW Post 3838 stands as a symbol of unity and continues to provide a safe place for current service members and veterans.

Humphries highlights their ongoing efforts to support veterans in the community, ranging from providing assistance to those in need of shelter to organizing events featuring live music and quality food.
