Construction expands Veterans Memorial Plaza at Cape County Park North
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) — Crews are busy at Cape County Park North, adding new sidewalks, expanding parking lots and building a new pavilion as part of upgrades to the Veterans Memorial Plaza, and expansions to the park.
“We’re very proud of it,” said Cape Girardeau County Presiding Commissioner Clint Tracy. “We come together five times a year and hold a ceremony here.”
Plans include adding more pavilions, a playground and new restrooms, and sidewalks to make the park more accessible for visitors.
The improvements will also allow more flags to be displayed to honor local veterans and connect trails for safer access to visitors.
Funding for the project comes from state grants and partnerships with local groups like the VFW and Lions Club.
Tracy said the goal is to have the plaza upgrades finished by Veterans Day, with other renovations continuing afterward like the lake renovations, and the new playground.
The projects are expected to be completed in 2026, with funding provided by grants from the Land Water Conservation Fund and the State of Missouri Transportation Alternative Program, as well as donations from local organizations.
County leaders hope the updates make Cape County Park North a family friendly destination and a lasting tribute to veterans.
