I-57 open in Mississippi County after deadly crash involving dozens of vehicles

MISSISSIPPI COUNTY, Mo. (KBSI) – Interstate 57 is open after a multi-vehicle crash that killed several people Thursday morning.

I-57 reopened about 5 a.m. on Friday after it was closed for about 20 hours.

Sgt. Clark Parrott with the Missouri Highway Patrol says there are multiple deaths and several vehicles caught on fire around the 13.4 mile marker.

The crash happened near Charleston, according to the Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office. It was reported at 8:39 a.m. on March 17, according to the Missouri Department of Transportation Traveler Information Map.

Emergency responders from throughout southeast Missouri responded to the scene.

Traffic was diverted. The Illinois Department of Transportation diverted traffic coming in to Missouri and sent vehicles through Cairo.

Most highways that provide an alternate route around the crash site were snarled with the extra traffic.
