Crews battling house fire in Jackson

JACKSON, Mo., (KBSI)- UPDATE:A residential fire broke out in the 700 block of Highland Drive at 6:20 a.m. Friday, causing significant damage to the structure.

Jackson Fire Rescue responded to the scene, where they found heavy smoke and fire showing on the back side of the residence. The sole occupant had escaped safely with the help of a neighbor who noticed the fire and called 911.

Firefighters used a transitional attack to knock down the fire and prevent extension. Additional resources were called in due to the heavy fire and cold weather conditions.

The fire was extinguished by 8 a.m., but the structure was deemed a complete loss due to heavy fire damage to the rear and smoke and water damage throughout.

The cause of the fire was determined to be a space heater. No injuries were reported.

Jackson Fire Rescue thanked the Jackson Police Department, Cape Girardeau Fire Department and other mutual aid agencies for their assistance.
