Crews fight very large structure fire in Herrin

HERRIN, Ill. (KBSI) – An old school building in Herrin caught fire and mutual aid was called in for assistance.
According to the Herrin Fire Department a little before 2 pm, on December 23, 2024 the on-duty Captain noticed a fire in the old West Side school.
A general alarm was then immediately requested for all Herrin personnel.
Additional mutual aid was requested from Marion, Carterville and Williamson County FPD.
An interior attack was made by 2 crews. Eventually, due to safety concerns all crews were called out and a MABAS commercial box alarm was called, bringing in more mutual aid companies.
In the end, the fire was contained to a couple areas.
The fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshals office.
No injuries were reported.
