Curfew issued for tornado-affected areas of Williamson County ends May 20th

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Ill., (KBSI) – Williamson County has suffered significant damage from a tornado, affecting a wide area of the county.

The storm damaged homes and structures, downed power lines and blocked roadways with trees.

Sheriff Jeff Diederich expressed concern for public safety due to the hazards and potential for looting.

In response, a curfew has been implemented in the affected area from May 17 to May 20, between 11:59 p.m. and 6 a.m.

During the curfew, travel will be restricted on public streets, except for residents, law enforcement, emergency personnel and authorized officials.

Checkpoints will be established, and deputies will patrol the area to prevent looting and ensure public safety.

State’s Attorney Ted Hampson vowed to prosecute anyone taking advantage of the disaster for criminal activity.
