Deputies assist dozens of motorists as winter storm hits Williamson County

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Ill., (KBSI) — Williamson County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded throughout the night and into Sunday as severe winter weather continued to impact the area.

Officials said road conditions deteriorated rapidly overnight due to snow and ice. Since about 5 a.m., deputies have assisted more than 80 motorists who slid off roadways, became stranded or needed help navigating hazardous conditions.

The sheriff’s office said the combination of snow, ice and dangerously cold temperatures has made travel especially treacherous and urged residents to avoid unnecessary trips and to check on friends, family and neighbors when it is safe to do so.

While deputies reported seeing numerous examples of neighbors helping one another during the storm, authorities also said arrests were made involving individuals accused of taking advantage of the conditions by committing vehicle burglaries. Extra patrols remain in place, officials said.

Deputies will continue working around the clock with local partners to assist residents and maintain public safety as winter conditions persist.
