Dexter Police Department joins national crackdown on drunk driving
DEXTER, Mo., (KBSI) — The Dexter Police Department is partnering with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, which runs from Aug. 15 to Sept. 1.
The high-visibility enforcement campaign aims to deter impaired driving and prevent fatalities during the Labor Day weekend. In 2023, 511 people died in traffic crashes nationwide during the Labor Day holiday, with 36% of those fatalities involving a drunk driver.
According to Captain John Moore, “We want our community members to understand that it’s our top priority to keep people safe. We’re asking everyone to plan ahead if they know they’ll be out drinking.”
To stay safe during the Labor Day holiday weekend, drivers are advised to plan ahead, secure a designated sober driver, or call a taxi or rideshare for a sober ride home. If someone finds themselves unable to drive, they should give their keys to a sober driver.
The public is also encouraged to take action if they spot a drunk driver or if a friend has been drinking and is considering driving. Anyone with information about impaired driving should contact the Dexter Police Department.
