Doniphan area preparing for major flooding

DONIPHAN, Mo. (KBSI) – Major flooding is expected throughout the Doniphan area.

According to the National Weather Service the current river is expected to crest at 28 feet which will cause major flooding for the area.

According to the Emergency Management of Ripley County Assistant Director Bryan Byrd they are knocking on doors and warning the public of possible flooding. Voluntary evacuation is encouraged.

Sources say anything over 18 feet is considered dangerous so 28 feet would be extremely dangerous.

Byrd says they are warning people because they are expecting flooding similar to what they saw in 2017 when the Current River crested at 33.1 feet.

Byrd says they are warning business owners and resident’s to move stuff to higher ground and prepare for serious flooding.

Current River is estimated to crest at 28 feet on Thursday November 5, 2024.

Byrd says the flood in 2017 caused a large amount of water rescues and in effort to keep first responders and citizen’s safe they are warning residents now.
