Dr. Brad Hodson begins his tenure as SEMO’s 19th President
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.(KBSI) — With three decades of experience in higher education, Dr. Brad Hodson is bringing that experience to Southeast Missouri State University as its 19th president.
Dr. Hodson, who has worked at three universities in Missouri, said Southeast immediately caught his attention because of its strong reputation and connected community.
“Southeast Missouri State has a very strong reputation in the state as a high quality institution with great people and a great community,” Dr. Hodson said. “When I saw the opportunity to be president, it immediately drew my attention.”
As he begins his tenure, Hodson said he’s excited to continue the historic campus, and connect with students, faculty and the Cape Girardeau community.
“What a beautiful place, the buildings, the people, the history,” Hodson said. “It’s just a phenomenal institution, 150 years plus and still going strong. It’s such an exciting place to be.”
Hodson said relationship building and advocacy will be the hallmarks of his presidency.
He plans to focus on strengthening connections inside and outside the university.
“One of my top priorities is keeping the university accessible and affordable,” Hodson said. “I was a first-generation college student, so I understand the challenges students face. I look forward to getting to know them, understanding their needs and helping them succeed, not just here at SEMO, but in their future careers.”
For now, Hodson said he plans to spend his first six months learning as much as he can about the university’s history, culture and more.
“That’ll be the fun part listening and understanding why things are the way they are,” he said. “Every university is different, and I’ll bring experiences I’ve gained to help guide SEMO forward.”
Outside the office, Hodson and his wife, Sue, are excited to explore Cape Girardeau and everything it has to offer. Since arriving in Cape Girardeau already taking the time to visit the local farmers market, restaurants, and more.
“We’re really excited to learn the history, the culture, the food, the music and the people,” Hodson said. “Everyone has been so welcoming. We’ve been made to feel very much at home.”
He also shared a message with parents as the fall semester approaches.
“Your students will be joining me as I begin my career here,” he said. “SEMO offers a great education and great value in a safe and welcoming environment. My wife and I have been warmly welcomed, and we want the same for your students.”
Since arriving, Hodson said he can’t say enough about the historic buildings, especially Academic Hall, where his new office is located.
“It’s hard not to fall in love with Academic Hall,” he said. “They just don’t build buildings like that anymore. I feel very lucky my office will be in such a majestic facility.”
Hodson will officially lead SEMO starting July 1, for the upcoming 2026 school year.
