Drury Development Corporation acquires old Sears Grand building

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – After setting vacant for more than seven years, the old Sears building in Cape Girardeau is getting a second life.
According to Rob Gilligan, President and CEO of Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce, the old Sears building located on Siemers Dr in Cape Girardeau was secured by the Drury Development Corporation and will be turned into a retail mall with about 5 different retail vendors, bringing more options and jobs to the area.
“So, the Drury Development Corporation, has acquired the building and just, worked out a development agreement opportunity with the city with support for redevelopment of that space” says Gilligan.
Gilligan shares that this project is one of many happening for Cape Girardeau.
“The Cape West Mall project, you know, Park West Mall is a great investment. We’ve seen some great new retailers open up over the last 12 months there. This new redevelopment of the Sears Grand building puts back to use a building that sat vacant for several years, and a core area right along I-55. We’ve also seen some great new construction projects and redevelopment projects along the Mount Auburn Road” says Gilligan.
Gilligan also shares Capes Plaza located directly across from the old Sears Grand building will also get some improvements, making that entire area a full retail shopping space and scheduled to be done by 2027.
“So really, about 18 months from now, we should see some tenants opening up in those spaces and some new development there on Siemers Drive” says Gilligan.
