Early morning fire damages Cope Alternative School in Murphysboro

MURPHYSBORO, Ill., (KBSI) — A fire damaged the Cope Alternative School on Shomaker Drive early Tuesday, prompting a response from local emergency services.

Firefighters were dispatched to the scene around 5:45 a.m. and quickly contained the blaze, which was largely confined to the south end of the building. Despite their efforts, the structure sustained substantial damage.

The Murphysboro Fire Department was assisted by the Murphysboro Police Department, Murphysboro Emergency Management and the Jackson County Ambulance Service.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Fire Department’s investigation division.
