Earthquake Preparedness Month: Illinois residents urged to plan ahead

Earthquake Month

SPRINGFIELD, Ill., (KBSI) — February is Earthquake Preparedness Month in Illinois, a state prone to seismic activity due to its location near the New Madrid Seismic Zone.

The worst earthquake in Illinois history occurred on Dec. 17, 1811, causing widespread destruction and ringing a church bell in Cairo.

According to the Central United States Earthquake Consortium, nearly 200 earthquakes occur annually in the central U.S.

To promote preparedness, the Southern 7 Health Department recommends creating a family emergency plan, building a supply kit and staying informed about emergency procedures.

During an earthquake, experts advise dropping to the floor, taking cover under sturdy furniture and holding on until the shaking stops.
