Safety plan for eclipse traffic in Cape Girardeau

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – The eclipse is coming up on Monday April 8, because traffic is expected to be high some areas are implementing a traffic safety plan.

The Cape Girardeau Police Department is implementing a traffic safety plan. One of the places you can view the eclipse in Cape is at the SportsPlex.

Cape Girardeau Police Officers will place barricades at the east side of the intersection of Limbaugh Lane and Veterans Memorial.

This will direct traffic northbound on Veterans Memorial to Jim Drury Way to the Sportsplex for parking.

At about 12:40 p.m. the barricades will be moved to the west side of Veterans Memorial and Limbaugh Ln. stopping northbound traffic to the Sportsplex. Barricades will be placed at Veterans Memorial and Jim Drury Way. All vehicles will exit Jim Drury to Limbaugh southbound.

Lieutenant Brad Smith with the Cape Girardeau Police Department says for safety reasons they are asking that people do not park on the side of the road or highway to view the eclipse Lots of areas around cape will have parking.

Parking is available for anyone that comes into the city we are not allowing you to set up any tents or stuff like that in the public parking areas because of the high volume of people coming into the city.

They are asking that you don’t bring any barbeque grills or anything with an open flame to events or set up lawn chairs or extra items in parking areas.

If we start noticing traffic congestion anywhere in the city we have officers monitoring that or if we get reports coming into our communications that were having some traffic problem’s we will go out there and manually direct traffic to get everyone moving the right way,” says Smith.

Cape Girardeau police ask that everyone have patience, follow traffic laws, stay off devices while driving and prepare for heavier traffic then usual the day of the eclipse.
