CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) – Emergency crews remain on the scene after an explosion caused a partial building collapse Thursday morning at the Reliant building on Progress Drive.
The explosion happened around 8:30 a.m., shaking nearby buildings, including the FOX23 news station off South Kingshighway.
When firefighters arrived, they found an active fire and a partial structural collapse, according to Cape Girardeau Fire Chief Randy Morris. A second alarm was issued to bring additional personnel and equipment to the scene.
Crews continue working to extinguish hot spots and search portions of the building that remain inaccessible because of the collapse. An excavator is being used to remove debris as part of the response.
The cause of the explosion remains under investigation. Morris said the business uses propane tanks, but officials have not determined whether propane was involved in the explosion.
The extent of any injuries has not been released.
Power has been shut off to businesses near the intersection of Progress Drive and Enterprise Street, including the FOX23 news station, while crews continue working in the area.
Officials say there is no threat to the public.
