Facing high egg prices, people are finding Easter egg alternatives for this year’s holiday
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) — Facing high egg prices, people are finding Easter egg alternatives for this year’s holiday celebration.
Every year, kids run across yards and parks searching for the colorful eggs they carefully dyed and designed for their egg hunt – a popular way to celebrate the Easter holiday.
However, with U.S. egg prices hitting a record high in March — a dozen large grade-A eggs costing $6.23 on average — the high price tags have people seeking other options for this year’s festivities.
Citizen journalists reached out through the Now Local News app to share their Easter egg alternatives.
“Easter eggs — well, we’re going to do the real ones for the meal and the plastic ones for the outside,” Kathy said.
One woman said her family is keeping costs down by reusing plastic eggs from last year and decorating them.
“My son’s painting them with markers and paints, and we will use those to hide this year as an alternative to eggs,” Christy said. “Plus, I don’t really like hard boiling and decorating eggs in the first place. It gets kind of messy.”
Another woman reusing plastic eggs is avoiding the cost of other Easter items as well, by filling the eggs with rewards written on wooden chips.
“You pick the movie tonight, or 20 extra minutes before bedtime, or family game night, pizza night – different things that we can do together as a family,” Alissa said. “These will be in their eggs this year, rather than using real eggs or just stuffing it with junk that we don’t need.”
The demand for Easter egg alternatives also prompted Jet-Puffed to release a marshmallow color-dying kit just in time for Sunday’s holiday.
Found exclusively on Walmart’s website, the Jet-Puffed Dip & Decorate Marshmallows kit is being sold for about two dollars.
