Fancy Farm Elementary School named 1 of 5 National Blue Ribbon Schools

FANCY FARM, Ky. (KBSI) – Fancy Farm Elementary School is one of five Kentucky schools named 2022 National Blue Ribbon Schools.

The Kentucky schools are among the 297 public and private elementary, middle and high schools across the country that were recognized this year. The recognition is based on a school’s overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.

The program recognizes schools in one of two performance categories, based on all student scores, subgroup student scores and graduation rates:

  • Exemplary High-Performing Schools: Among the state’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests.
  • Exemplary Achievement Gap-Closing Schools: Among the state’s highest performing schools in closing achievement gaps between a school’s student groups and all students.

Every year, the U.S. Department of Education seeks out great American schools that demonstrate all students can achieve high levels of education.

“There’s a big application process that goes into it,” said Fancy Farm Elementary Principal Jarrod McMillin. “All the teachers worked hard to collect data and answer questions as part of that application process. And it was realized last week that we did receive that award.”

McMillin is the new principal for Fancy Farm Elementary. Janet Throgmorton was the previous principal when the school was nominated. She followed up with the application process.

“Coming into it, it’s a huge honor of knowing that I’m getting to take over a school that has achieved that distinction,” McMillin said. “And I’m very humbled by it as well, because I know that I get to continue that legacy, to get to carry on in my role as the new principal here at Fancy Farm.”

A National Blue Ribbon School flag gracing a school’s entryway or on a flagpole is a widely recognized symbol of exemplary teaching and learning.

“I’m very humbled that I get to be a part of it,” said McMillin. “I have to just give all the respect and props to our students, and our staff that, that, got us to this point.”

The five schools and their districts in Kentucky receiving the honor include:

  • Cairo Elementary School (Henderson County)
  • Fancy Farm Elementary School (Graves County)
  • Frankfort High School (Frankfort Independent)
  • Longbranch Elementary School (Boone County)
  • Samuel Woodfill Elementary School (Fort Thomas Independent)

The national Blue Ribbon Schools program has become a trademark of excellence and a symbol of exemplary teaching and learning, according to the Kentucky Department of Education.

National Blue Ribbon Schools serve as models of effective school practices for state and district educators throughout the nation.

The 2022 National Blue Ribbon Schools will be honored at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. later this school year.
