Farm to Table event brings local flavors to downtown Cape Girardeau

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — A popular downtown Cape Girardeau tradition is returning in October, bringing local chefs, farmers and community members together for a meal on Spanish Street.

Old Town Cape will host its annual Revivify Farm to Table event Sunday, Oct. 11. The event serves as the organization’s largest fundraiser of the year.

Organizers close a portion of Spanish Street and set up one long table for guests to share a three-course meal prepared by local chefs.

“We really love how it brings the community together,” Old Town Cape Executive Director Alix Gasser said. “It really showcases our downtown chefs. We’re able to source local produce for those different courses.”

Six local chefs will participate this year, with two chefs working together on each course.

The menu will include a fall vegetable salad with crispy jasmine rice and yuzu vinaigrette for the first course. Another course will feature creamy orzo with winter squash and kale.

For the entree, Celebrations Restaurant and 36 Restaurant & Bar will work together to prepare roasted beef using meat donated by Homestead Meat Company.

DeWayne Schaaf, chef and owner of Celebrations Restaurant, said organizers are working to source ingredients from local farmers and businesses whenever possible.

“We have everything from the rice, the produce, the meat, the oils,” Schaaf said. “We are trying to build that sense of community that we all believe in.”

Schaaf, originally from Ste. Genevieve, has worked in the restaurant industry in Cape Girardeau since the 1990s.

The three-course meal will be followed by desserts made by members of the community.

Proceeds from the annual event benefit Old Town Cape and its work in downtown Cape Girardeau.
