WEST FRANKFORT, Ill., (KBSI)—Investigators are working to determine what caused a deadly house fire early Tuesday morning in West Frankfort.

The West Frankfort Fire Department responded around 3:55 a.m. to a reported house fire on East Seventh Street, where occupants were believed to be inside. Firefighters located one person in the residence and pronounced the individual dead at the scene. Crews encountered heavy smoke and fire while working to control the blaze. No firefighters were injured during the response.

The Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Franklin County Coroner are assisting with the investigation. Authorities have not released the victim’s identity as they notify next of kin.
