Businesses step up to support family after deadly fire in Dexter

DEXTER, Mo., (KBSI)— Businesses in Dexter are organizing fundraisers to support a family affected by a deadly house fire that claimed three lives.

Fitness Connection owner Sheena Barber said she was proud of how the community responded.

“I’ve been very, very proud of our community. The very first day of the fire, there was even a vehicle donated to the family. Donations were already being brought in before we even posted what was needed. It’s been overwhelming,” Barber said.

While clothing donations have been steady, many other items are still needed.

“Right now, it did start with clothes, of course,” Barber said. “What we haven’t had donated as much would be household items, hygiene items — things like chargers, plastic totes to sort through clothing — just everyday necessities.”

The family is also in need of temporary housing as they are currently staying with a neighbor.

Barber is also planning a business raffle, with local shops donating gift cards, products and services. All proceeds from the raffle will go directly to the family.

“I feel that’s what small businesses are for,” she said. “We should be able to come together as a community and provide that for anybody who walks through our doors.”

Min Lin, owner of Peking Chinese Kitchen in Dexter, announced the restaurant will donate 100% of its profits on Feb. 14 to help with rebuilding efforts.

“We need each other. We support each other,” Lin said. “This is not a business choice. It’s my heart.”

Lin said she hopes the fundraiser will provide meaningful support for the family.

“I wish I could do more,” she said.

Both businesses say the goal is not only to provide financial support, but to show the family they are not facing this tragedy alone.

More businesses are stepping up to assist in various ways as the community continues to respond.

As the family begins rebuilding, local business owners say every donation makes a difference. Residents can dine at Peking on Feb. 14 or bring needed household and hygiene supplies to Fitness Connection during business hours.
