FDA recalls applesauce pouches after multiple cases of lead

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (KBSI) – The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) alerts consumers of a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recall of children’s cinnamon applesauce pouches that may contain elevated levels of lead.
At least one confirmed case in Illinois and 34 nationwide have been linked to the product that can be found being sold online and in chain grocery stores.
Information on specific lot numbers and UPC codes can be found through the recall advisory issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The products may contain elevated levels of lead which can impact a child’s development. Most children with elevated lead levels have no symptoms, however, nonspecific lead symptoms can include headache, abdominal pain, and vomiting.
Consumers should not eat or serve the product and should dispose of it safely. According to IDPH, consumers should open the packets and dump the contents into a plastic bag before discarding it.
Parents suspecting that their child has lead poisoning should consult their health care provider.
