Fire at West City Walmart prompts evacuation, no injuries reported

WEST CITY, Ill., (KBSI) — Emergency crews responded to a fire at the West City Walmart on Tuesday morning, prompting the evacuation of the store.
The West City Fire Department and police department arrived at the scene at 8:22 a.m., finding the garden center’s lucite section engulfed in smoke.
A thorough assessment by officials found no evidence of foul play or ill intent. Preliminary findings suggest a heater placed near charcoal may have contributed to the fire.
Thanks to the swift response and coordinated efforts of emergency personnel, the fire was contained without further incident. No injuries were reported.
The store was evacuated as a precaution, and employees were allowed to return later Tuesday morning. Walmart reopened for regular business hours.
The Village of West City expressed gratitude to several fire departments that provided assistance, including West City, Benton, Zeigler, West Frankfort, Ewing, Buckner and DuQuoin.
Agencies providing station coverage during the incident were also thanked for ensuring community safety.
