SCOTT CITY, Mo. (KBSI) – Two adults and three children lost their home in a fire Thursday afternoon in Scott City.

Firefighters from multiple fire departments fought the fire.

Scott City firefighters responded to a residential first alarm structure fire in the 300 block of Keeley Avenue in Scott City at 4:12 p.m. on Thursday, July 11.

When the first firefighters arrived on scene, the fire was upgraded to a working fire in offensive mode. Upgrading it to a working fire automatically brings in mutual aid from the Cape Girardeau Fire Department, N.B.C. Fire Protection District, Chaffee Fire Department and Gordonville for the air support unit along with Benton Fire assigned to Station 1 for city coverage.

Heavy fire was coming from the attached garage. Smoke was on all sides of the home.

The Scott City public works director assisted with flushing and establishing a hydrant connection along with providing drinking water to personnel.

Scott City Police Department & North Scott County Ambulance District also assisted on the scene.

Due to the amount of fire in the garage and that firefighters say the garage was extremely hard to access, it was upgraded to a second alarm.

The second alarm moved Benton firefighters from Scott City Fire Station 1 to the scene. It also brought firefighters from the Scott County Rural Fire Protection District and the Oran Fire Protection District to the scene.

Once the fire was contained, personnel tried overhaul of the garage but due to the amount of personal belongings in the garage along with the roof collapse of the garage, firefighters say the hotspots were trapped under a large amount of debris.

JAC3 Contracting offered help with a skidsteer to assist with moving the debris out of the garage to ensure all hotspots were extinguished.

Everyone was out of the building when firefighters arrived. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The home is considered a total loss.
