Fire Marshall investigates after large house fire in Poplar Bluff

POPLAR BLUFF(KBSI) – A large house fire is under investigation in Poplar Bluff after an abandoned house caught fire.
According to the Poplar Bluff Fire Department they responded to a fully involved house fire at 10:11 am on February 26, 2025.
About 9 firefighters with the Poplar Bluff fire department quickly got to work on getting the heavy smoke and flames under control as neighbors watched in shock.
Keith Downen lives across the street and says he started to panic.
“I was walking back to my bank, and I noticed on the far side flames, and I didn’t know what to do and I ran in and asked my mom and dad and wife what I do. I didn’t know what to do” says Downen.
Gretta Labrier lives nearby and, wasn’t home when the fire first started but she says smoke could be seen in town.
“We heard it from Walmart, we heard it from 2 young people, then we heard it at the mission, and we saw a lot of smoke” says Labrier.” “They said it went up in like a puff of fire!”
Poplar Bluff Fire Department says they did not need back up from other fire agencies for this situation, but the Poplar Bluff Police Department and the Poplar Bluff Street Department assisted as the entire block was blocked off until around 4:00 pm, as crews worked.
The fire department says no injuries were reported and according to neighbors the home went up in flames pretty quickly.
The house was believed to be abandoned, and the Fire Marshall is still investigating how the fire started.
No injuries were reported.
