Firefighters put out apartment fire in Cape Girardeau

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – Firefighters responded to a fire at an apartment complex in Cape Girardeau Monday afternoon on Independence Street.

When crews arrived, they found light-to-moderate smoke coming from a door. Firefighters quickly put out the fire.

According to firefighters, the cause of the fire was due to a dryer vent being unclean and clogged with debris.

Battalion Chief Brad Dillow reminds the community to make sure they are checking dryers annually, saying, “You should clean your dryer vents out, at least, I’d say a couple times a year. Once as a minimum.”

If you haven’t cleaned your dyer in a while, experts suggest watching for tell-tale signs to let you know when it’s time. For instance, if your clothes come out of the dyer damp, if the machine feels hot to the touch while in use, or if you happen to see lint accumulation outside of the vent.

No one was injured.
