Firefighters warn people to be smart when burning because of dry conditions
KIRKSEY, Ky. (KBSI) – Calloway County Fire & Rescue warns residents to be smart and vigilant when burning or because of dry conditions.
Around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 3 Calloway County Fire & Rescue was dispatched to the 700 block of Washer Road in the Kirksey community for a call of a wheat field on fire, less than one mile from CCFR Station 5. Units from Station 5 were on scene within a few minutes to find about a 1000-foot stretch of a ditch on fire on the side of the field. The fire was slowly moving into the field. Units were able to put out the fire quickly and kept it from catching the field on fire.
On Sunday, June 4, Calloway County Fire & Rescue was dispatched to the 1100 block of Coopertown Road in the Lynn Grove community for the report of another wheat field on fire. It was within a mile from CCFR Station 6.
Fire personnel found the ditch line on fire spreading into the wheat field. A brush truck from Station 5 arrived on scene and put out the fire to keep it from further burning.
Units from Station 1 and Station 6 also responded to assist.
Firefighters from Calloway County Fire-Rescue remind everyone that since the area has not had rain in a while to be smart and vigilant when burning or even when disposing of lit cigarettes out of car windows as it could catch the grass next to the road on fire.
