Fireworks laws for each state
SIKESTON, Mo. (KBSI) – Many people are eager to set off fireworks for the Fourth of July.
Although, many people are unaware of the firework laws that are enforced by law enforcement.
“We found is that people don’t use them properly people, will shoot them at other people or as what we will call ‘bottle rocket war’ because it does cause this nuisance of people are getting hurt. People aren’t using them properly and really it saves the ER from unnecessary visits for someone who might have a real emergency,” said Sgt. Tyler Rowe, Public Information Officer for the Sikeston Department of Public Safety.
Many cities have specific regulations on fireworks but the surrounding states have its own laws.
For Kentucky, all must be 18 years or older to purchase a firework. One cannot ignite fireworks within two hundred feet of any home vehicle or structure or another person.
And for missouri, fireworks must be purchased by licensed retailers. Cape girardeau and jackson city prohibit bottle rockets or anything on a stick.
“We have we have this ordinance. It’s there for for everybody’s protection for the protection of people’s property,” said Sgt. Rowe. “That’s why we put on the fireworks display for everybody.”
For Missouri, fireworks are legal, but the cities determine its own regulations.
Listed below are the laws and regulations for several states.
Missouri – Fireworks must be purchased by licensed retailers. Cape Girardeau and Jackson city prohibit bottle rockets or anything on a stick.
Illinois – Illinois is one of the few states to limit residents to sparklers or other novelty fireworks. If caught with illegal fireworks, one will be charged with fines up to $2500 or a year behind bars. Carrying fireworks across states lines is also prohibited by law.
Kentucky – All must be 18 years or older to purchase a firework. One cannot ignite fireworks within 200 feet of any home vehicle or structure or another person.
Tennessee – You must be 16 years old or older to purchase a firework with valid ID. Sky lanterns are prohibited and drones are unable to be flown during a large fireworks display.
