First female firefighter in Metropolis honored during Women’s History Month

METROPOLIS, Ill. (KBSI) – March is Women’s History Month. So the accomplishments of women nationwide are being celebrated.

The Metropolis Fire Department is celebrating one of their own, and a first for the department.

Gabriel Wrye, also known as Gabby, is the first full-time female firefighter for the Metropolis.

She began her journey as a firefighter for the military, and then later applied for the Metropolis Fire Department.

She says she enjoys helping people and being there for them on the worst day of their lives.

Her favorite part of the job?

“One thing that’s pretty cool is like if kids come in,” said Wyre. “You also get to share what you’re doing what you’re passionate about.”

For the future firefighters, her advice is to always try something new, and keep following your dreams.
