MAYFIELD, Ky. (KBSI) — Five juveniles were injured Tuesday after a vehicle carrying seven people crashed on Interstate 69 in Graves County, according to the Graves County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to the 20-mile marker of Interstate 69 for a reported single-vehicle crash with injuries.
The investigation found that 18-year-old Tyrek Sharp of Paducah was driving north on I-69 when the vehicle left the roadway and entered the median. Authorities said Sharp overcorrected, causing the vehicle to re-enter the roadway before striking a guardrail on the right shoulder. The vehicle came to rest blocking both northbound lanes.
Deputies determined there were seven occupants in the vehicle, despite only five available seat belts. Only two occupants were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
Five juveniles were taken by Mayfield-Graves County EMS to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities said the injured passengers were not wearing seat belts.
Sharp was cited on multiple traffic offenses.
The crash remains under investigation by the Graves County Sheriff’s Office.
