Five people found dead, two injured in suspected carbon monoxide incident near Rolla

PHELPS COUNTY, Mo. (KBSI) — Five people were found dead and two others were injured after emergency crews responded to a carbon monoxide alert at a duplex east of Rolla early Thursday morning, according to the Phelps County Sheriff’s Department.

The Rolla Rural Fire Department responded to the residence at approximately 5:24 a.m. after receiving a carbon monoxide alarm notification.

Upon arrival, responders found one person with moderate injuries on one side of the duplex. On the opposite side, five people were found dead and another individual was critically injured.

Emergency personnel removed all victims from the residence and secured the scene for further investigation. During the response, a Phelps County deputy was exposed to carbon monoxide and was treated by Phelps Health EMS.

The two surviving victims were airlifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The investigation is being conducted by the Phelps County Sheriff’s Department, Phelps County Detectives, the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the Phelps County Coroner and the Crawford County Coroner.

Authorities said the identities of the victims are not being released until next of kin have been notified.

The cause of the incident remains under investigation.
