Flooding Causes Dangerous Road Conditions Across Western Kentucky

Kentucky Rain

WICKLIFFE, Ky. (KBSI) — Heavy rainfall has led to some flooding across western Kentucky, creating dangerous travel conditions and forcing some residents to reconsider getting out.

Sandy Hart, a resident of Wickliffe, described the situation. “I was told the area was so bad” she said.

The Paducah National Weather Service is monitoring the flooding, which has impacted several counties along the Kentucky and Tennessee border.

Justin Gibbs of the National Weather Service. “We also have reports of a rockslide due to heavy rain saturating the hillside.”

As the water levels continue to rise, residents like Hart are staying put. “I’m safe. I run the Kentucky Veteran Patriot Museum and live right next door, so I just sloshed through the water and came here, then went home,” she said.

The National Weather Service warns that standing water could remain a serious concern through the night. “We’re worried about this being a pretty significant event, with flooding in areas that don’t normally flood,” Gibbs said.

For those living in flood-prone areas, Gibbs advises caution. “The best advice we can give is to get where you’re going and stay put. Don’t travel unless absolutely necessary,” he said. “There’s water on roadways that are not normally flooded, and it won’t take much to get stuck. It’s easy to get swept away by floodwaters or stall your vehicle. Best case, you ruin your car; worst case, you put yourself in a life-threatening situation.”

As the rain continues, officials urge residents to prioritize safety. “It’s a serious situation tonight,” Gibbs said. “Be careful, because it won’t take much to get yourself in trouble.”
