Former Cape Capahas players speak on the legacy of Jess Bolen
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) -Jess Bolen, a beloved figure in Cape Girardeau and the baseball community, passed away Monday, January 13, at the age of 82. Bolen managed the Cape Capahas, one of the country’s earliest minor league teams, for nearly 50 years, leaving his mark on his players and the region.
Former players touch on Bolen’s presence in their lives. Chris Janet, a Capahas veteran, shared, “Jess became a big part of our lives because we created lifelong relationships.” Bolen was known for recruiting players of all levels, looking to those who best represented the Cape Girardeau community.
Steve Williams, another former player, talked about Bolen’s unique coaching style. “Jess had a way of getting people to play their best. He taught the game, created a family atmosphere, and gave us a space to grow as athletes and people.”
The field where the Capahas played remains a testament to Bolen’s dedication to the game. Bruce Qualls says, “This field wouldn’t be here without Jess. He gave the community free, quality baseball and a place to gather.”
Players thank Bolen for creating a family-like culture and instilling confidence. “He made us better than we thought we could be,” Janet says. “We played hard but had fun. That was the Capaha way.”
The memories of summers spent playing for Bolen, filled with laughter, memories, wins, losses, and so much more, are cherished by all who knew him. Jess Bolen’s legacy lives on in the hearts of his players and the community he served so passionately.
