Former president of area youth football foundation accused of stealing more than $25,000

JACKSON, Mo. (KBSI) – The former president of the Jackson Area Youth Football Foundation is accused of stealing more than $25,000 from the group’s account.

Around April 15, the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff’s Office received information from the JAYF which operates community youth football for grades K-6, that they had discovered the misuse of funds from the JAYF account by the former President/Treasurer Timothy E. Smith.

Sheriff’s deputies say Smith confessed to using the JAYF account for personal use of over $25,000.

Cape Girardeau Prosecuting Attorney Mark Welker charged Smith with the Class C Felony of stealing.

Associate Judge Frank Miller set the bond at 10,000, cash only.

“Really just the family sense of it all, I love that the kids got to really bond with their coaches.”

Jackson mom, Alexandria Mckennon has been part of the football league for a few years, where her son was able to make new friends and begin his football career.

She says she was shocked when she heard the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff’s office had discovered the league’s treasurer — Timothy Smith was not doing what he was supposed to with the league’s money — stealing funds from the account for personal use — she says it creates a tough dynamic to navigate in the close-knit community —
“I think that’s it’s an unfortunate situation.”But now she’s happy to know the league is moving forward — with a new treasurer, Ronnie Maxwell

She adds, “So far, it seems things have been, it’s, it’s going really well. So, I myself have never had a negative experience with the league my fiancé coached, and it was wonderful we had a great time with that I loved getting to know the kids and all that.”

Maxwell says the transition happened four months ago and he’s excited to see things moving into place for the league.

He says, “We’re excited about the direction of the community support that we’re getting so far.”

Maxwell adds that the outcry for support is amazing, and the new board has been able to acquire new equipment for the young teams.

He says, “We’re going to try to bring a lot more excitement to Jackson Area Youth to JAYF.”
